A Day in the Life of an SME Builder: Finishing Touches and Second Fixing

0630 – Check emails, texts, and the paper diary to get organised for the day. The paper diary works when there is no signal or wi-fi; I don't see me ever going without one for work.

0700 – Leave home.

0730 – Arrive at the job and go over the order of work in my head. Joinery work today includes:

Building a timber step, edged with oak that was machined up the previous afternoon, and infill it with LVT flooring to match the main floor.

Reduce the height of an internal door to accommodate the new engineered wood flooring, the door needs to be trimmed down to clear it properly.

Fitting of hinges and handles to the utility cupboard doors and hang them, followed by fitting a bespoke glass splashback to the wall behind the kitchen hob and installing upstands to the worktop.

Meanwhile I make and return phone calls. Notifications for emails and texts are kept on silent, to be looked at when taking a break for some food and water.

There are external trims to install around uPVC windows, then assess which tools and materials can be cleared from site as we edge towards the end of the project, loading them back into the vans.

To wrap up, we clean the work areas, I have a chat with the client and then start the journey back to the home office via the builders' merchant to pick up some fixings and sealants.
